transcoding in 1080i/59.94, clips still coming out as 1080p/29.97
Hi everyone. So the company I’m working with right now has recently moved to Avid 8 and we all have some workflow questions.
We’re working in a 1080i/5997 project. When we AMA link to quicktime files, they will show up in the project as having the same format as the project. We’ve then been transcoding from these AMA files to get smaller files to work with, which we will then conform to full res later on. However there are a few things we’re unsure about.
Once transcoded, these files all show up as 29.97p. We’ve tested transcoding with both “convert to project frame rate” and “keep same as source”. Either way, they are still coming out as 29.97p, rather than 1080i/59.97, even though the footage is still clearly interlaced. Anyone have any ideas why this may be? They also have an effect applied to them automatically (I believe this is new to Avid 8). This seems like it will be a problem if the editor needs to apply any timewarps of his own.
Anyone have any insight into why this is or any workflow advice?

In Avid 8.x there is a checkbox in the transcode window to retain the original frame rate. You are not forced to automatically conform to the project rate. I am not in front of a system right now so I can’t tell you the exact wording of the option

I’d still be tempted to AMA link and transcode in a 1080i59.94 project. At least to see how they look, and if that looks right.

Sorry if I was unclear. I AM selecting the option of keeping the original frame rate. Even so, after the clip is transcoded, it shows up with a format of 1080p/29.97, even though the AMA clip I am transcoding from is 1080i/59.94.

Hey Shane. My project is in fact 1080i/59.94. As are the AMA clips I am trying to transcode. When I select keep source, they come out as 1080p/29.97. This is what I do not understand. Because the transcoded clips framerate doesn’t match the project, Avid applies the automatic timewarp effect, which we want to avoid.

OK, I read that and STILL got it wrong in my head. What camera was used to shoot this footage? Sure that it is 59.95i and not 29.97p? Same frame rate, as we know, but interlaced vs progressive. Just wondering if the camera was set to progressive.

Thanks for the quick response. We didn’t shoot the footage, just received quicktimes from the network to work with.

What frame rate shows up in avid when you ama the clips?
(in the bin display)When you go to transcode, does it give you the warning that it is about to convert the footage?

You can also “field step” in Media Composer when in an interlace project. One thing to check is making sure you did not select a DNxHR resolution which does not support interlace formats.
