  • Transcoding HDV clips from a Firestore

We have Final Cut Pro 6 with an AJA Kona LHe in a MacPro tower. Up till now we had used this only for SD work, capturing through SDI off a Sony DVCAM VTR.

We are working with a trial JVC DY-HD250 camera and a Firestore portable hard drive. The camera shoots HDV codec Quicktime files to the Firestore which can then just be connected to the MacPro and copied over.

However I want to transcode the clips to either ProRes or 10-bit Uncompressed. Do you have to take the multiple steps of importing the HDV clips, then export them out to Media Manager for transcode, and then further import the resulting clips? Or is there a way to do this all in one step from within FCP?

Perhaps this is what Log and Transfer is for? Or is that strictly for P2 cards?

copy all the clips from the firestore to your raid or wherever you store video.

use compressor and batch convert them to your codec of choice.

I transfer my Firestore QT files to the Mac and then simply drop them into a ProRez Hi Quality timeline.

    No rendering necessary.
