    Hi Cow-ers:

Cutting a feature shot on P2 this fall — thinking about transcoding all the footage to DV so I can offline on my PowerBook G4 1.67. Any tips as to how to do this most effectively? And am I correct in assuming that if the names of the DV copies are exactly the same as the original HD files, I should be able to just put the HD files online and FCP will link automatically? Or will I have to re-link the footage each time?

Any real-world advice is much appreciated.

    Best, JIM.

YOu can edit DVCPRO HD with that laptop. I do on occasion. All you need is a FW800 drive, or better yet an eSATA drive and eSATA PCMCIA card.

I’d vote against transcoding and trying to relink at a later date. That isn’t FCPs stongsuit, and keeping things simple would be the way to go. Save you lots of time in the long run.

MacGurus sells a PCMCIA eSATA card.

    Hi Shane:

Thanks for your response. The only reason I’m considering a transcode is to have the option to be totally portable — either cutting DV off the internal drive, or maybe even my iPod (at Offline RT res…)

I am also considering the Seritek cardbus SATA adaptor as my RAID arrays are 2 Seritek 2-drive enclosures, so I could definitely just shuttle those around to cut either on the laptop or on my G5/Kona set-up — with no relinking required. And I take your note about relinking not being FCP’s strong suit seriously, believe me.

    Thanks again for the advice.
