Lovely Premiere people, I am flummoxed. Please help!

I have 1-1/2 hr interview, A (4 files)& B Cam(7 files), shot in 4K. We’re finishing in 1920×1080, so I want to transcode this footage from the get go, instead of working with proxies. I have done this – Pro Res 444 codec, stereo audio – and these files will not play more than 2 seconds w/o freezing, both in Source monitor, and timeline. Pulling into timeline and rendering takes forever.

B-roll for this project was shot natively in 1920×1080, and plays just fine.

I’ve cleared Media Cache, have 20% of storage free, copied the files to a different drive.

    My specs:
    MacPro (Late 2013)
    Processor: 3.7 GHz Quad-Core
    Memory: 32GB
    Graphics AMD FirePro D300 GB

    Mojave 10.14.4

    latest version of Premiere Pro

I transcoded with ME, but also tried just exporting a sequence from PP with the 1920×1080 settings. (actually 2048 x 1080 as it was shot with the FS7, with the plan to reframe).

    Any thoughts appreciated!!

Well, you’ve encoded to the highest quality ProRes there is…very high data rate. What are you playing these files from? You’ll need a fast 2-4 drive RAID array for that quality…connected via Thunderbolt 2 at least. Single drives can’t handle this high a data rate file…and it’ll be too much for USB3

The “master” drive is a Lacie Rugged 4TB portable drive, connected via USB (3? I think). I tried moving the footage to a Samsung SSD, also connected via USB.

I just tried it on my new laptop with the SSD, connected via USB3 – the fastest I’ve got – and still having the issue.

Dave! I transferred to a different Thunderbolt drive, and I believe that did the trick.

My older MacPro doesn’t have the faster USB3 to make use of the new Solid State drive I have. I appreciate your making me think about that issue!

    Thank you!!

    Hi Julie,

As mentioned by others, the 444 is most likely overkill that is creating very huge files that are difficult for your storage to play back. Moving forward, ProRes HQ ought to be more than sufficient. Considering how extremely compressed most source footage from the cameras is these days, there is nothing to be gained by going uncompressed or anywhere close to it.

    Thanks

    Jeff
