  • Transcode 400Mbps ALL-I to what for later color correction

I’m in a spot. I have a bunch of footage recorded on the GH5 internally at the ALL-I 400Mbps setting. Exact settings: 4K ALL-I 422 10Bit 30FPS 400Mbps in the VLOGL color profile. These files are nightmarish to preview even in VLC; actually it’s not possible—I have to create a Premiere project and import the files just to be able to see whats included in the footage.

So, I’m wondering what people recommend as transcode settings. I can transcode these files into ProRes 444 or DNxHR HQX (just examples). My goal is to retain pretty much all the data possible in the footage so as to be able to color correct appropriately later on … but also be able to preview these files much more easily.

    Any advice? Thanks!

I keep all my files in their original form. With the original files, you know you are retaining everything the camera was able to capture.

The All-I 400Mbps files are going to be much smaller than either of the formats you cited, and you still will not be able to play them in any of the free desktop players that I have found. That is except for Media Player Classic which does play 10 bit VLog and VLogL video files. Of course the playback will not be color corrected, but you can review the footage.

The Cnx Video Player claims to be able to play many of these video files, but you must purchase the codecs to do so from them. Since I have not done so, I do not know if this player actually does play these files.
