  • Transcend hard drive working on some Macs not others

Posted by Alex Newton on November 26, 2015 at 2:35 pm

    Hi all,

I have a Transcend 1TB StoreJet USB3 external hard drive. Up until two days ago it worked with my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) perfectly. However, now when I plug it in it neither appears on my desktop or Disk Utility. Despite this it’s blue light still comes on indicating that it is receiving some sort of connection from the Mac.

What makes this stranger is the fact that it still works on my iMac (2010) without any problems at all. Plus, all my other hard drives still work on my MacBook Pro.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

    Alex

That is quite strange. The most likely cause would be a bad USB cable on the drive or bad USB port on the Mac. If the drive works in your iMac and other drives work when connected to the port o your MacBook Pro, it doesn’t sound like a hardware issue unless it’s very intermittent. I would reboot the MacBook Pro and see if maybe it was a cache problem.

Does the drive show up in Disk Utility on the MacBook Pro? Maybe it’s physically being seen but not mounted for some reason?

    Hi John,

    Thanks for your response.

I’ve rebooted the MacBook Pro and still nothing. It doesn’t appear on Disk Utility either.

To make things even stranger it doesn’t work on other Macbooks now either (I borrowed a friends to check). So it only works on my iMac having previously worked on everything.

Any further thoughts? I’m completely stumped!

    Cheers,

    Alex

Buy a new drive… plug the Transcend into your iMac and copy everything off of it to the new drive… and hope that it doesn’t go missing in the middle of it. Seriously, I would get the data off of that drive while you still can. Then maybe format the drive and see if it shows up on your other Macs.

Thanks John, yeah, assumed formatting (after backing up) would be the next course of action.

    Cheers,

Game over I think. I’ve formatted the drive and it still doesn’t work on my MacBook Pro. Still works on the iMac though. It’s a mystery!

Wow that’s odd. Time to buy a new drive. 🙁
