Tracking/clone stamping/mattes…turn off the lights!
Greetings Cows,
I have to remove the moving red car light in the shot here and others like it: https://vimeo.com/43236206 (password is: “test”)
The car light comes in at about 6 seconds.
Figured it would be pretty easy…track the red dot, attach clone stamp to the dot, and offset the source time in the stamp controls enough to cover it.
Not so easy…
I think it’s because the camera is moving, and the rate at which the dot moves is the same as the camera. So if I offset the time a few frames, the dot has moved close enough to be sourced by the stamp, and If i offset the time enough to get past the red dot, it is sampling imagery that is too far away and dissimilar.
What I might do instead is track in a still of the parts where the dot moves (like the entire window for instance). It’s not that noticeable that the footage is still. However this is still a lot of work, with the architecture moving in front of the dot and the camera moving etc.
Lesson learned…I turned off my car lights for the rest of the shoot! 🙂
How would you do this? Is there some part of the clone stamp/track process I’m not understanding?

instead of moving the clone source in time, why not try moving the clone source to a few pixels directly below the light? Looking at the image there seems to be enough material for almost all the frames without having to resort to time displacement tricks.
Use as small a clone as possible and give it a soft edge .Infact you probably could get away with duplicating the video to another layer, shifting its position vertically a small amount then making a small feathered mask to remove everything except a small patch to cover the light. All the texture changes look like they happen across vertical boundaries so they should line up quite easily.
