Tracking A Green Screen with a Rock Band In Front Of It!!!!
Hi there,
I am currently working on a music clip which has a band in a massive sound stage with a massive green screen behind them. I need to track an image onto the green screen, but there are no tracking points. To add to this the memebers of the band often move over the corners of the screen which is the place where I have tried test tracks today.
So the problem being that I can’t get to the corner of the screen, as there is either a band memeber that steps in front of it at some point or a drum kit etc is blocking it.
Is there any way of tracking this, before I start on animating the image onto the screen.

If the intension was to have them put into another “world” like lots of videos are doing lately, it is imperative that you have tracking markers. Yeah, you COULD do it by hand, but in my opinion that it rediculously out of the question.
Lots of the good videos like by Tim Hope and such shoot the band on greenscreen with tracking markers spaced out all over the screen. Then they run the shots through a 3D tracker and generate the 3D files they need for their main work environment (3DS Max for Tim Hope).
If you are just doing one shot or two you can maybe get away with tracking something stable in the shot like something on the drum kit. But more than that, it would be irresponsible for the shoot to be done with that intention in post and not have the elements needed to pull off the effect.

AE will allow for multiple track markers. i’ve never really had to play around with it much. but as i understand it, you can track different parts of the video at difference times. so track your corner markers, until a band member steps in the way, then switch to another tracker etc… until the first marker becomes clear again. I think Abode has one of Brian Maffitt’s tutorials showing how to do this on their website.
I do agree with Chris that you’ve got a hell of a time ahead of you though. Good luck.
