Hi guys,
I’m finishing post on a short now, and would love some advice. I don’t know if After Effects is the best program for this, but anyhow:
We shot a scene with a guy in a giant cockroach suit – and it looks like a guy in a cockroach suit.
https://www.omniads.com/dan/cockroach.tiffSo I’d like to figure out if gfx work could improve his “costume” perhaps making a realistic giant bug. I was thinking about planting an actual shell onto the back of the costume and tracking his movements.
My questions are:
1. can AE do something like this?
2. does this sound like a reasonable correction/fix?
3. and how long would this kind of thing take?Any other advice would be great. Thanks.

AE can track 2-D, but you’d need a 3-D model and 3-D tracker unless he’s robotically perfect in a side view the whole time. This means solving 3-D tracking in Bonjour and rendering a 3-D shell in 3dmax.

For 3D tracking (matchmoving) consider buying Syntheyes. In this situation, use it with a real 3D app, not AE.
I don’t think it’ll be a slam-dunk. You’ll probably have a fair bit of hand-matching to do, judging by the footage.

Thanks for the info guys. I’ll do a little more research, but I’m thinking I may need a straight 3D program, like MAYA.
