tracing a circle?
Hi all,
I am producing an architectural animation and need a bit of help with a seemingly simple procedure. I would like to animate a circle being drawn. I have looked at the write-on tool,etc but is there an easier way to do this?

3d stroke or just the stroke plug in and a simple circular mask is as easy as it gets.

I have not been working in After Effects too long so everything is very new. Could you explain a bit more for me?

open a new comp, create a solid of any color. Use the ellipse tool to draw a circle. Then under plug ins go to generate – stroke. Make paint style on transparent and animate the start and the end of the stroke to taste. There are many ways to do this even easier than this, but its what came to mind quickly

So I followed the instructions you gave and still nothing
1. Create new Composition
2. Create solid (right click in timeline and New>Solid
3. Create Ellipse (stroke only)
4. Effect > generate > stroke
5. Paint style = on transparent
6. Click stopwatch next to ‘Start’, change percentage
7. Slide timeline slider over
8. Click Stopwatch next to ‘End”, change percentage
9. Play back…..nothing, except the gray Solid?Any ideas?

you do NOT ‘create ellipse’ you use the ellipse TOOL to manually draw an ellipse which will essentially crop your solid area in the shape of an ellipse. When you choose stroke and select paint style ‘on transparent’ the solid center of the layer will disappear leaving ONLY a white stroke around your ellipse. Animate it any way you want.

ok, figured out the problem. I was using the ellipse tool and it was not on the layer for the solid I created. It is working great now!!!
One more question for now, how would I go about creating the outline of a more complex shape. For example, if I had 2 or 3 or more circles that were merged together to make one object (think like the number 8, without anything in the middle). Or any shape, for that matter…

Actually, I figured it out. Using the same process as described above, I just copy and pasted the more complex shape from Illustrator. Thanks for the help, this is really a great resource!
