Totally Smooth AVCHD Editing: What do I need?
I’m going to be building a new comp, and I want to know what the minimum CPU/memory/GPU specs are that will give me the ability to edit and preview AVC HD files in Vegas without stuttering. Rendering time is much less important to me. I am leaning toward an Intel/nVidia combo at this time, but I could be persuaded.
I guess the first question should be, can any of you edit and manipulate AVC HD files without stuttering with today’s technology? Or is this something we’re all still struggling with?

I don’t know if you can edit without any stuttering in the preview window set at best, full with AVCHD, but Vegas Pro 10 makes use of the Cuda core, NVidia GEForce cards. I can get pretty smooth previews with my i7, 920 6 gig ram Windows 7 64 bit with a low end NVidia card running Vegas Pro 10.

I’m getting very smooth AVCHD (coming off an HMC150), with Vegas 10. nVidia 8 GBs RAM, dual monitors. Sometimes, I do fall to less than BEST, but it oftens renders fine. Then other times I transcode to AVI, for Green Screen situations. seems to do better. In short, it’s doable. Better than transcoding everything to ProRes in FCP. I complete jobs much faster in AVI and Vegas 10. I have both FCP and Vegas on my desk, so I can choose whatever is best for the job. Vegas wins 90% of the time, for me at least. I do simple documentary work.
Know your requirements going in. It will help move you in the right direction.
