Total Newbie AJA KONA LHi
i am starting my own website i know a lot about computer hardware
but never heard of a kona card i have many HD video files but also
have many SD files i done some research and kept hearing about kona cards.i have a good pc so what do i need to get the kona card working
i know i need more memory and hard drives in RAID maybe 8TB.im only looking to upconvert SD to HD so the AJA KONA LHi is the
bestfor me do i need the anything else do i need a break out box.MY PC

The Kona cards do nice up- and down- conversion, but they do hardware signal conversion. So, you need “somewhere” for that HD signal (HD-SDI) to go on the output side. Can you capture with a different machine? Or is this for web use? (If so, why convert to HD only to down-convert to a web codec?)
Kona cards are primarily for real-time video post-production: capture and editing. You might be better off with a software solution. More details would help. i.e.: what are you doing with your video?-Jeff

Are you saying i need two damm computers
i want upconvert SD to HD because i heard
kona cards make SD video files look like
HD files it takes ages upscaling to HD
with CS5 .i heard it only takes 5 mins with
a kona card and the quality is much better. -
In my mind the break out box is essential if you want longevity and reliability of your signal. I have it with my KONA LHi and adding the XLR and BNCs in a frame structure that is stable will only improve your workflow, especially in a studio environment.
As far as things go, if you are upconverting only with no other need but converting content to HD, and not editing with it once you get it there, perhaps Sorenson Squeeze might be a better solution. It won’t look like native HD since it will look soft when its scaled upward, but it will it there. A tool like Combustion can scale it up also if you like manual control and know what you are doing.

Michael– I’m saying you need to realize that Kona cards are video I/O cards made for postproduction suites and real-time editing. Not compression or accelerator cards. So the upscaled HD signal is a signal, not a file.
There might be other cards that do the sort of thing you seem to be looking for.
