  • Topographic map of North America?

Posted by Cthomas on May 1, 2006 at 7:02 pm

I’ve been looking for days trying to find a 3D model of North America. I thought it’d be easy to find online, but I can’t seem to come up with anything. It doesn’t need to be high-poly or even have any textures on it. Just the model.

I have a topographic rendering of North America; does anyone know of a simple way to extrude it into a poly?

    Thanks!

Did you look into this as an alternative:

    Hey Noah,

I did find that site, but have absolutely no idea how to obtain the data I need from it. I’ve found lots of data on NASA’s website, but it seems to be in a format that I have no way of decoding. I wish it was as simple as: “here’s a DEM file of North America!” or “hey; how about a low-poly obj file? Click here to download!” 🙂

    Anyone else have any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hey,

I tried this the other night…look for an illustrator/eps file of North America, bring it into C4d as a spline, and drop it into an extrude nurb. Works like a charm, I’ll post my illustrator file if you need it.

    Take care,

    Nick

I tried a similar approach, but am looking to create variable heights (like mountains and valleys) to create a (fairly) accurate map of North America.

Thanks for the suggestion, though! 🙂

    Chris,

I’m fairly new to this, if anyone finds fault with my post, please correct me.

Go here and download the free maps:

    https://www.truearth.com/free&specials/free_truearth_content.htm

You can take the shaded relief map and apply it to the bump channel of your material, it will ‘look’ 3d.

These maps are for the entire earth, I suppose you could tinker around with them in Photoshop to only display North America.

    Take care,

    Nick
