Topaz Video AI
Posted by Bruce Quayle on November 21, 2022 at 3:16 pmDo any of you folks have any experience of products from Topaz Labs?
They are offering a Black Friday sale on their image and video products. On the face of it, they look extremely good…but then so do most promos.
First hand experience is always a better judge.
Many thanks,
Bruce

November 21, 2022 at 4:12 pmMy first experience with a Topaz Labs’ product was Gigapixel which upscaled still images. It was incredible. I upscaled a small jpeg 600%, and the result was much better than the original.
When a video project came up that required upscaling, I purchased Video Enhance AI (pre-cursor to Video AI) a few years ago. It’s amazing. Not only does it uprez, but it de-blurs, de-noises and makes other positive picture improvements. I’ve used it with bad footage and in my experience, the result has looked better than the original.
I was editing an HD project and after watching a wide shot, the director asked me if we could zoom in to lose part of the foreground. As it required a 40% zoom in, I up-rezed the HD clip to 4K, which I then used in the HD timeline. After zooming in, the result looked exactly like the original HD.
I’ve been recommending Topaz Labs’ products for years. I’ve used them for forensic projects, and they shine. Topaz Labs has fully functional trials, so see for yourself.

November 21, 2022 at 4:28 pmThank you for your detailed reply John. I must say the results look remarkable.
I have some old HDV video I need to include in a film project I’m working on and this looks like it could really help.
Thanks again for your insight.

November 21, 2022 at 7:07 pmHey John, (and Bruce),
Echo Bruce on this, this is great advice. Thank you very much!
Out of interest, do you know if it is best as stand-alone, or is there a plug-in for the video AI, like the photo version works in Light room?

November 21, 2022 at 9:10 pmThe still programs like Gigapixel AI work as plugins in Photoshop (and maybe others) as well as standalone. AFAIK, Video AI only works as standalone.

November 25, 2022 at 1:09 pmAs with any workflows and software solutions, the results are subjective. I use the Topaz Suite (Sharpen, Noise Reduction, Gigapixel). I have dialed in the results and love the software. I just purchased Video AI on a special and look forward to doing the same. For Photo AI and all the products it is not for all images or videos and just a tool for enhancing certain content. Certainly a game changer. I shoot with Nikon D500s and D7500 and older D lenses. With this workflow and process I can put my name on it.

November 25, 2022 at 6:58 pmThanks Steven.
I’ve bought the complete package offered on the Black Friday promo and have been blown away with the results, both in video and photos. Certainly an excellent purchase.
And I would like to add a shout out to their support department. They have been fantastic helping this newbie get the most out of the software. Cheers to Ida!

September 25, 2023 at 11:46 pmI’ve had a good run with Topaz, I use it to edit most videos and sync them with audio files I generate using the Wavel AI text to speech engine… It’s good, the rendering might get slow at times but then again it will differ from device to device
