I have been using Topaz Video AI to upscale 720 x 480 .AVI files to HD 1920 x 1080. With the new release of DaVinci Resolve 19, I see a ‘super scale’ upscaling feature built into DVR 19 that also uses AI. I also see that there is a 4x NVIDIA RTX Video option for those of us with fast NVIDIA cards.

Does anyone have experience with both, such that you have an opinion that Topaz AI upscaling is better than the DVR 19 super scaling? (Or, vice versa.)

    Cheers,

I think Topaz wins because it is doing three basic things adaptively and dynamically in one pass. Upscale with sharpening, denoising and de-artifacting. Resolve can do most of that but the upscale, sharpen and denoise are separate plugin processes. For me the compression de-artifacting in Topaz is an important part of its secret sauce.

Thank you. That seems to be the consensus with most of the YouTube comparisons I have viewed (although, not with your technical detail).

    Cheers.
