I’m making a scene which consists of 2D artwork dropped onto tubes. The setup of the material is an image of a white silhouette on a black background loaded into the alpha channel and a colour loaded into the luminance channel because i don’t want to see any shadows.

The material is then dropped onto a tube which has the same inner and outer radius so that it’s completely thin. This object is copied multiple times and the inner and outer radius increases each time to create what will later be a sort of ripple effect when animated. With me so far?

Okay so the problem is that when i render it out there are unwanted black elements appearing inside the tubes. There are so far 17 tubes so far. If i hide ten in any combination it renders fine. Anymore than 7 tubes visible and problems occur.

I have other elements in the scene with a similar setup added to flat planes but these don’t seem to be affected with the same problem.

If anyone knows how i can fix this that would be ace. I can’t render the elements out a bit at a time because of the way i need the scene to work when it’s composited later on.

    Thanks for your time

I’m guessing that the problem is caused by coplanar faces. The render engine doesn’t know what to do with faces that occupy the same space. Try setting a very slight difference between the inner and outer diameters of your tubes.

Thanks for your advice. I made the change you suggested which although it didn’t fix the current problem i’ve left them with a slightly bigger outer radius just in case the issue with coplanar faces arises later on.

Fortunately increasing the ray depth in the render options fixed the problem.
