To shoot in 4K 60mbps or 1080P 60mbps if rendering to 1080P 25-50mbps?
This is peripherally related to Vegas (I use Pro 13; still waiting for v14 bugs to get fixed ☺ ) because the workflow may be different in 4K versus 1080.
I have not yet tried editing 4K source files.
I am using a Sony FDR-X3000 action cam and the options which I can use in my application (video from a light aircraft) are
2160 100mbps 30fps
2160 60mbps 30fps
1080 60mbps 60fpsThe first one is a bit marginal in terms of maximum recording time with the 256GB SD card and I would prefer to not use it. Also the camera gets pretty warm and will shut down within an hour or so if it doesn’t have enough airflow around it.
I am rendering to 1080P 60fps and would pick the bitrate to fit inside my 5GB/week Vimeo upload budget ☺ I find that 25mbps is plenty for anything other than fast moving scenery or moving fine textures (e.g. tarmac does funny things if you pan, at less than 50mbps).
Of course Vimeo downsamples to ~5mbps anyway but you can “Download” the original file if you want the quality.
I have not found a lossless process in Vegas i.e. matching codecs. The above three formats are Sony’s XAVC format.
But also I am doing a bit of lens correction with a plug-in, and obviously that will lose some pixels (because one has to crop afterwards) which is why I want to try shooting in 4K.
The camera does not have a 2K option. That would be really useful.
The other thing is whether I should edit the 4K footage in Vegas, or use Handbrake to go down to say 2K first. Handbrake is a very slick program which seems to do a very good job and I wonder if Vegas is as good.
I appreciate any input.
