To Digibeta and Beyond

After years of coping with DV and HDV we are getting projects in on digibeta and are trying to make it as easy as possible. We edit on FCP Studio with a MacPro onto sata jbod disks. To start off with we would hire in the player at the start of the project for digitising.
My questions are these:
1. What is the best solution for capture that will give us room for the future? I looked at the Kona LHe but don’t know if it’s more than we need. (We like the improved support for HDV editing)
2. What codec would we capture with for best quality vs. sata limitations?
3. Can we turn one of our 23″ screens into an effective monitor to replace our old pvm for these edits?So not much to ask there. Any advice much appreciated.

The Kona LH would be a great card for what you need to do. Has SDI SD and HD and analog inputs and outs… will work with SD, and any flavor of HD except dual link HD. You could capture to ProRes with it if you’re Mac is an intel machine. Much better than HDV native from a time savings point of view. Lossless visually, but requires more drive space.
With the digibeta, capturing to uncompressed 10 bit would be best, however you need to be capturing to at least a dual drive raid 0… a single sata might be a bit slow, and cause dropped frames. 8 bit uncompressed might be OK though, and that should run from a single SATA without a problem.
You can use the 23″ for monitoring, but need to add a Matrox MXO to the mix. I don’t particularly like the way SD looks with it on the 23″ CD, but you have that PVM for that… Works quite well with HD however.
