Tips for editing a short film in Avid
Hi,
I am editing a short film and for the first time am doing this in Avid. I could use some help or some tips regarding the preparation of this process.
I can give you the following information on the footage:
It’s filmed on Alexa and will be delivered to me in ProRes 4444, 24 fpsShould I be making proxy files so my mac will be faster during the editing process? If so, what is the best way to do this? In avid, via an external program, … ?
From what I read Avid works best with DNxHD, should I be transcoding my footage to this codec? If so, will there be any loss in quality?I’d be glad to hear from you guys, as I am a little lost. I have found so much posts on this subject that it’s become a little confusing.

Codec playback performance is not only about the codec itself, but the drive system, how it’s connected, etc. which usually leads most projects to transcoding to DNxHD. And even then the above will have an impact.
That aside, how are you planning on finishing? Where is color correction going to be done? Will it be round tripped or finished in a color correction or other type system? What is the delivery format?
These answers will help define a workflow.
