TIP: Importing DVD camera recorded media to FCP X without transcoding
I was brought a project that had footage recorded with a Canon consumer camera that recorded to mini DVD. Each start and stop was a chapter in the DVD stream. Tried MPEG Streamclip couldn’t see the chapters. I even tried Premier Pro and it didn’t see the chapters either. Just one long clip.
Anyway, I tried FCP X import. No dice. Then on a whim I opened iMovie, and tried import. Sure enough the iMovie import window recognized the DVD media with all the chapters in tact. And when iMovie imported, it didn’t transcode, but instead rewrapped in a .mov file.
Those .mov files imported into FCP X without a problem with the mv2 codec. Very cool.
BTW. I converted the DVD to a disk image first using Disk Utility. Made import much faster.
