    Hello Faithful Avid Users,

I’m just learning Avid (have been a FCP user for some time now), and I’m having some difficulty figuring something out.

I have no problem loading video, creating a timeline, doing basic edits, etc. But my timeline always starts at 00:00:30:00, and I can’t figure out how to change this. I’m sure it’s something simple, but how do you do it?

And in an un-related question, does Avid Express Studio offer any good color correction tools? I’m currently using Avid Free DV, but have been looking into buying the full version of Avid. I do a lot of promotional work for a news station, and a lot of the video I get is less than perfect. I’d like to be able to intergrate editig, color corretion, basic graphics/titles, etc all into one program.

    Thanks!
    Nate

In the main window find (bins, settings, etc…). Select the Settings Tab>Double Click “General” and you can change the starting timecode of the project.

I’m not as familiar with Xpress as I am with Adrenaline – so I’m unsure of the answer to the second part of your question.

Wow I feel like an idiot! Thanks for the help! It’s been right in front of me the entire time!

    Hey Nate,
No need to feel foolish. Most of the time the button we need is right there – there’s just too many buttons.

You could try to find a color correction tool under tools>effect palette and see if there’s a color correction tool to be used.

    Best of luck,

    Hi Nate,

In addition to the good answer you already got, you can also change your sequence timecode by right-clicking in the record side monitor and selecting Get Sequence Info, which brings up a window where you can change the timecode.

Or if you don’t like that way, you can display the timecode of the sequence in the bin, and click on it to change it.

As for color correction, Xpress Pro has color correction built in. Take a look at the bottom of the timeline where there are four buttons for source/record editing, trim mode, effects mode and color correction mode.

    good luck,
    Carl

Thanks for the extra info Carl! Right clicking on the record window seems to be a quicker way to get to that window. You wouldn’t happen to know how to set a default timeline timecode start time, would you? So when I open Avid with a new project, the timecode will automatically start at 00:58:00:00 as instead of 00:00:30:00?

Also, I’m using Avid Free DV right now, and I don’t think it has color correction. However, I just ordered Avid Express Pro, so I’ll take a look at the color correction when it comes in!

    Thanks again!

Go to the project window and click on the settings tab. Then select “general” and enter the time code you want into the window that says “default starting timecode”. From then on just right click in the record window and select “get sequence info” if you ever want to change the starting timecode from the default.

You need the full software for the color correction tools –

The Color Correction mode, derived from symphony, gives you not only HSL wheels (like FCP) but also Curves (and naturalmatch!)
