You can tell this is a novice question, I’m trying to get reacquainted with FCP & I’m unsure about the correct terminology so I’ll describe it best I can.

After I’ve added a clip to the timeline & then delete it all of the clips ahead of the one I just deleted slide back in the timeline the duration of the deleted clip. How can I set the timeline so that other events aren’t affected whenever I add or delete a clip? Can anyone tell me what this setting/tool is called & where to find it? Also I love keyboard shortcuts so that would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot I’m sure this is an easy one for someone out there.

Hit the big delete key, not the little one (sorry don’t know the technical term for the keyboard keys). I guess it’s the back delete key, not the forward delete.

Haha, nice. I knew it would be something absurdly simple. Thank you for your reply.

that works when deleting, but what about other things making the rest of the timeline slide like changing the speed of a clip? I CANNOT make the timeline stop sliding when I adjust the speed of a clip at the front.. it’s making me pretty mad.
got a simple button for that one?

I asked that same question and though I think it makes sense to have such shortcut apparently it isn’t ‘logical’. Here’s the link to the post:

This answer does allow you to edit speeds without affecting other events on the timeline. But it is terribly ineffective.
If you find another answer please let me know. Thanks.

[Erik Mitchell] “got a simple button for that one?”

Well, not exactly. But this will help.
