Timeline Setting
I’m about to start a project where I have been given 2x different types of rushes.
1: 1920×1080 25fps PROGRESSIVE (encoded as ProRes422)
2: 1440×1080 50i INTERLACED (encoded to ProRess422)The final production will end up on a Standard Definition PAL DVD.
I’m using Final Cut v6.06 and am not sure what sequence settings I should set my timeline as?

I would convert your 1440X1080 50i to 1920X1080 25p to get all your media to match.
Use Compressor to do the conversion and make sure you turn on Frame Controls

Out of curiosity, would I be better off converting all the rushes to 720×576 25P?

I thought about advising you to do that, but I think it’s time we all keep in mind the possibility that you COULD need this, or part of this, in HD in the future. You just never know. Technology is moving fast.

Robert, the other question I wanted to ask you, If I transcode the 50i rushes to 25P, won’t that create like a flicker when played back on a SD TV? or will the DVD player interlace the signal on output?

hmm…I don’t know for sure. I don’t think it will flicker. At work we shoot 720p and encode SD MPEGs for DVD and preserve the progressive scanning. We have no problems with our DVDs

ok I’ll give that a shot.
Making sure I have this right:
1. I need to transcode all my 1440×1080 50i rushes to 1920×1080 25P using compressor & making sure my frame control is turned on. Are there any other settings I need to adjust in frame control?
2. create a new sequence that will be 1920×1080 25 Progressive, and cut away.
3. When done, encode my final project as an MPEG-2, 720×576 25fps Progressive Scan & burn to a DVD.
Anything unusual…?

Yup. Set all the drop-down options to “Best.” There is one for Field Dominance that you should set to Progressive.

David, not sure if this is a problem..?
1: I setup my timeline sequence settings as per your instruction:
2. added the rushes and export them to mpeg-2 using compressor and the settings you suggested.
3. I’ve opened DVD SP set my canvas to SD 16:9, and added the mpeg-2 clip to the V1 track. When I click on track (top left of DVD SP screen)
Under the general tab, it show 720x576i..? I’ve checked the mpeg-2 file and it’s definitely progressive. Any idea what I’m doing wrong here?

A quick search in the manual indicated to me that only 60p NTSC and 50p PAL is support in DVDSP for SD DVDs. Search “Supported Video Resolution” in the manual for more info
When you are done editing, use Compressor to convert your 50i tp 50p

Actually, I just tried to encode an MPEG2 for DVDSP at 720X480 60p. Compressor doesn’t allow this option.
Maybe you can edit progressive, then deinterlace in Compressor for DVD.
