Timeline gap closing
I must have inadvertently changed a setting and I want to change it back. When I delete a clip on the timeline, the gap automatically closes. I do not want the gap to close. How do I do this? The same thing is happening when I apply a transition. If I delete the transition, the clip loses as many frames as the transition was long. Thanks in advance.

There are two separate and distinct delete buttons on your keyboard, both of which work differently. One simply deletes the selected clip or transition and the other is a “ripple delete,” which as you say, “closes the gap.” Which key is which depend upon the type of Mac and type of keyboard you are using. Which MAC are you using and what keyboard?

The delete key that is above your return key should perform a “lift edit” – which does not close the gap. Holding shift while pressing that same delete key performs a ripple delete which closes the gap. You can also perform the ripple delete by pressing the second delete key which is next to the home and the end keys.
If pressing the delete key that is above the return key is somehow performing a ripple delete (which it shouldn’t by default), then you can simply map that key to perform a lift edit.
