  • Timecode to monitor via HD-SDI

Posted by Jason Mann on April 22, 2008 at 10:28 pm

We just got our new JVC-V24L1D, and have it hooked up to our Kona 3/Final Cut Pro system.

So far, everything works great, except for timecode. When I connect our HDCAM deck directly to one of the JVC’s SDI inputs, the timecode displays properly on the monitor.

However, when I’ve got the Kona 3’s output hooked up to the SDI input, I get a great picture, and audio levels, but no timecode. (It just read “TC:–:–:–:–“)

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Have you turned on timecode in the AJA control panel?

    Jason,

Open the Kona Control Panel — it installed with your drivers and can befound in the Applications Folder. Now click on “Timecode” on the button bar. The Input dropdown menu should be set to RP188 LTC and the Output should have the box checked by “Use QT Timecode” and the Timecode burn-in should be set to “On.”

Sorry – I wasn’t clear before. The timecode burn using the Kona is working fine for me.

The timecode display I’m talking about is built into the JVC monitor itself. (It displays above the frame, in the letterbox area.) The monitor gets that timecode and audio levels via HD-SDI. (And that works fine with the HDCAM deck.)

I think it’s more a case of whether Final Cut actually sends that timecode out vie HD-SDI the way the deck does…

    Any idea?
Thanks for the replies so far

If it does export the timecode, it will have something to do with AJA control panel timecode section. My gut feeling is that it doesn’t right now. You might have to have a IOHD with timecode out for it to work.

I suggest you give AJA support a call. They could answer your question.

I still believe the “Use Qt timecode” needs to be on in the Kona Control Panel.

    Thanks guys.

David – “Use QT Timecode” is on. I have the actual timecode dropdown menu (that makes the timecode window appear) off.

Thanks again, I think I’ll call Aja.
