we’re ready to build/purchase a new editing PC for HD editing.

    We use Vegas and premiere.

Need ideas on what components to add. All suggestions are very welcome
prices, too as well as where to buy.

    Thank you

Nowadays you can build your own i7 930, 6gb, 2 1TB 7200rpm drives and decent video card for about $700 if cost is a factor. If you’re doing 2+ hour HD programs you may want a little more ram. Cost for CPU’s gives diminishing returns but if the money is in the budget then nothing will speed up rendering time like a faster CPU.

Brand-wise I’ve personally done a lot of builds with Gigabyte motherboards and Western Digital hard drives. Using Asus optical drives and Verbatim media I’ve never had a bad disc.

I go with Dave in this. An I7 is the way to go. Understand though, Vegas is a CPU based only program so a good Invidea card with a GPU will make no difference in preview quality or render speed. But Premiere can make use of Graphic card GPUs and give you better preview frame rate and faster render speeds. With an I7, you don’t really need it, as it’s fast enough to see what your doing, without pre-renders as long as your not editing MP4, H.264 or AVCHD files with alot of tracks an effects. Hope this helps, Danny Hays
