Time code invisible or gone?
I sent out this question to a few of the big names in FCP but unfortunately no answer… maybe someone has an idea. I tried quite a few things…
Once a video clip has been modified in FCP and then converted into an e.g. QuickTime clip, the date / time code does not seem retrievable anymore from the QuickTime clip when seen through an another system (e.g. video recorder). Is that true? Isn’t there a program to search for it? I have a bunch of modified clips that I try to get the original dates from when they were shot… thanks to anyone!

That information is called METADATA, and it is embedded in the original file. If you export that file as another Quicktime, that information is lost. Especially if you export it from the TIMELINE. Typically if you export something from the Viewer, a lot of information is retained, but the metadata such as the embedded date and time stamps, are not. Those are only retained in the original files.
Using the Media Manager to RECOMPRESS the footage MIGHT retain that data, but as I don’t have software that can read that data (like CatDV) I cannot say that for certain.

Possible workaround for you…
You can drag the clip you encoded back into FCP’s browser…load it into the viewer…and then use the Modify/Timecode command to enter the correct timecode back into the clip.

one other important point:
if you export from FCP as a QuickTime Movie, you should retain TC and Reel# metadata.
if you export with QuickTime Conversion, then you lose TC & Reel#.
