Okay, the Tiled Painting from Layer is a cool ability. Two questions:

    1) Is the only way back to 2D to go through 3D -> Render? Because really I just wanted the repeating texture itself.

    2) I was using the pencil tool, but when I draw, it looks like it is anti-aliasing the drawing, instead of letting me draw hard pixels. Is there some way I can draw on the texture layer normally but have it show the repeating texture in another view window or something?

Okay, I’ve figured out how to access the texture as a “layer.” Then I can edit it in one window while I have the full view in the other window. Which is 90% of the way there.

The one thing that’s still an annoyance is the tiled view doesn’t update live. It only updatse when I select that window.
