This is nuts, in a good way! Resolution Independent Timelines
So we heard the talk of “resolution independent timelines” and I don’t think we realized that means you can EFFORTLESSLY SWITCH TIMELINES BETWEEN RESOLUTIONS! Sorry for all caps. Perhaps everyone already realized this, but it is new to me.
I bought some 1080p footage into a 720p timeline. Of course FCP resized the clip, but then I realized I can change that timeline (project) back into 1080p and it remembers all the relative positions of titles, composites, etc! I even switched it to 4K and it still plays back, titles in the right place.
Then to top it off, you can switch it to 4×3. It will letterbox the video by default, but that is where the “Spacial Conform” settings come into play. In your 16×9 timeline, set your clip to “fill” rather than “fit” and then when you move to 4×3 that clip will zoom. Then you could use the trim tools to do a pan and scan.
So a few uses for this:
– 4×3 and 16×9 versions of a project. Create your 16×9 project. Lock the picture. Set all your video clips to “fill”. Duplicate your timeline, switch to 4×3 and then tweak for a pan and scan.– Edit 1080p a bit quicker on your MacBook Pro by switching the timeline to 720p or even Anamorphic SD (something is slightly wrong with anamorphic SD there are about 3 extra pixels on the left and right side). Back on your Mac Pro, flip it back to 1080p.
To modify the settings on a project:
Command – J, then from the inspector click the wrench icon.To modify a compound clip:
Select, then from the gear icon choose “Edit Compound Clip Settings”– T.
