This is a stretch
Posted by Neal Klaeser on November 2, 2011 at 11:55 amI know that this is a stretch but I need to monitor my HD edit on a professional SD monitor. How can I attach this to my iMac? Can I loop it through a camera or through my mini-display port? I know the image would be letterboxed. Is there a converter out there that does this?

BlackMagic, AJA, Matrox and Motu has different solutions to get that done.

November 2, 2011 at 12:54 pmFrom an iMAC? Only if the iMac has Thunderbolt, and you get a Thunderbolt IO device like Matrox MXO2 Mini with TB, AJA IO XT.
Professional video monitoring and iMac is a rare thing. Only Thunderbolt makes it possible.

November 2, 2011 at 2:54 pmWell, mirror the desktop and run an adaptor from the VGA port into a scan converter and then into your SD monitor, I guess.

November 2, 2011 at 4:37 pmWell, I tried several methods of connecting HDTV displays to my iMac (which does not have a ThunderBolt connector) so I need to connect to mini-display port. When connecting a external consumer HDTV monitor via HDMI or VGA I was experiencing stuttering or strobing. I have been recommended to connect a Matrox MXO box between the iMac and the external monitor but I don’t have the funds to afford a $1000 device right now. I ultimately connected an Apple Cinema Display and configured my desktop so that my bins are on the Cinema Display and I made the Canvas and Browser larger. If anyone has any other recommendations I am open to suggestions.

November 2, 2011 at 4:39 pmJust know that this will be far from color accurate. But a decent method for client monitoring.

November 2, 2011 at 4:43 pmIf you have a firewire device, like a dsr-20 or DV camera, then you can use that for your video out and the video out will be letterboxed. There are some caveats, the RT is lessened, and even at a full render I think it’s a little sampled but I might be remembering wrong. BUT, it should be the right NTSC color for color correction and such. Just getting down converted to DV. I did this for awhile when started working with HD, but everything was going out SD to DVDs or even to DVCam tape.
Your HD AE work can also be mirrored and monitored this way.

November 2, 2011 at 4:52 pmOk, just to update I tried it just now. My 1080i ProRes Sequence looks like hell fully rendered, full quality playback. Main reason is it’s a really harsh interpolated downsample, and the interlacing isn’t really supported I don’t think. BUT BUT BUT this is pretty cool. Near perfect results by playing with the RT controls to the left of the sequence. I set it to medium and I think that removes every other line, essentially deinterlacing it, and now the interpolated downsample looks great because it’s dealing with half the data. Counterintuitive, but nearly dead on for working with a client or for color correction.
Try it.

Not really Bret. It’s better than a computer monitor, but a different color space than HD. That doesn’t make it a deal-breaker, just that it’s not truly accurate, just a close approximation, that is close enough for many.

November 2, 2011 at 4:55 pmYes, you are right regarding the sampling or buzzing so I think I will just stay with the way I have it currently configured until I invest in a Matrox box or something like it.

November 2, 2011 at 5:03 pmWell he needed it on an SD monitor, so the color space is going to be different whether it comes from the SD out of my Matrox or the DV deck. I’m no expert on the differences between HD and SD color space. What are they exactly? I mean in FCP the scopes are the same. Rendering in AE to Pro Res the only difference is the scale of the image. Nothing I do has been affected by differences between the two. I still keep my whites under 100 or less, I keep my blacks at 0, etc.
