  • Thinking of buying a DVX100b for student capstone

I’m not exactly at what you would call a “film school,” but they do have an…alright video production division of the comm. department. I’ve been shooting with a GL2 in the past, and with some nice color correction and lighting, my most recent work has looked pretty nice. (for gl2 standards) I’m going to be shooting a short independent-type film for a capstone, and the DVX100b seems to be a good investment at this time. I have spent some time looking into those 35mm adapters that make the footage look amazing. Some of the home brew ones that run around $1000(all parts) seem to be worth it for the price. The only problem is that my school never really trained me that much on special lenses or other important technicalities that could be learned from field work. I think that at this point the best way for me to learn is to just jump in, buy the DVX and get an adapter in order to learn the ropes. I really want something that is different and spectacular for my last production at school.

Any suggestions on extra parts for the DVX I should purchase along side? The rebate that is out comes with a nice DVX book, but I think I might be lost on lens adapters.

    -thanks

I’d learn the DVX first before the adapter. I’ve been shooting on one for years and have gotten awesome results with just the stock lens. And don’t forget good cinematography is part lens choice, part lighting, part composition and part having something interesting in the frame.

I’ve noticed that some dvx footage with no adapters looks really good, but most of the time it still has a definite video quality to it(from seeing others amateur footage). How do people with the DVX achieve such high quality (film like) images without the adapters. (I know good lighting and some post helps, but do other lens’ as basic add ons, help the picture quality? I would love to duplicate the depth of field not achievable with the standard lens)

For greater depth of field you would use a P+S technic or a MovieTube. For filmic quality- it’s lighting, composition, production design, color correction- etc. Basically it’s experience and skill, there’s no magic button(or bullet).
