  • Thinking of a custom build PC laptop for latest version of Premiere any suggestions?

Posted by Roli Rivelino on August 22, 2012 at 11:47 pm

I’m finally leaving FCP and Mac behind and am trading up to Premiere Pro, I edit all sorts, mainly HD footage from a variety of prosumer cams HVX, EX3, C300 etc.

I’ll expect to do a fair amount of motion graphics, but all fairly lightweight to begin with, hopefully getting heavier.

I’m looking to get a PC laptop as it’s for a new business I’m setting up with someone and the machine will most probably be used by the both of us at different locations. I’m thinking of custom building as I’ve seen what a friend got for a couple of hundred and was impressed.

I’m hoping that for around £5-600 custom I can get what I would pay £1000-1200 off the shelf.

So what should I be looking at? I’m assuming as high spec intel processor as possible and Nvidia graphics card, but can someone give me pointers as to which I should go for? How much RAM minimum and anything else I should be thinking about.

Or maybe I shouldn’t go for custom? A friend who’s a mid-weight AE guy reckons I could be in for a lot of trouble if I go the custom route. Whaddya reckon?

Oh also any pointers on an external screen?

    Many thanks.

I’d love to see a custom laptop matching Lenovo W530 specs at this kind of a price delta. Well, preferably quality and serviceability, as well. 50%? Don’t think so. Components cost more, much more.

Editors who are happy with their custom laptops have been spotted in the wild but I personally have never seen one.

You are in the UK, looks like; head to Lenovo UK, look up Thinkpad W530, configure it with:
    – Core i7-3610QM
    – 16GB RAM
    – NVIDIA Quadro K2000M Graphics 2GB
    – 1920×1080 display
    – Win7 Pro 64-bit
    – 3-year warranty

    … that’s £1,710.67.

    Same as above except:
    – 8GB RAM
    – NVIDIA Quadro K1000M Graphics 2GB
    – 1600×900 display
    … is £1,502.47

If that’s still outside the budget, consider IdeaPad Y580 (US tech specs):
    – Core i7-3610QM Processor
    – NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX660M 2GB graphics
    – 8GB DDR3 SDRAM 1600MHz
    – 15.6″ display 1920×1080
    – 1TB 5400 + 64GB SSD Hard drive
    – Windows Home Premium 64-bit
    – 1-yr warranty

At £999.99 and with 2GB discrete graphics suitable for GPU acceleration in Premiere Pro, it’s hard to beat. My only concern is that hybrid drive with a 5400rpm main spindle – I don’t see a 7200rpm one being sold in the UK; I wouldn’t want to edit from that, and would purchase a reputable (G-Tech?) external 7200rpm USB3.0 one for media to edit from.

I edit on an Asus G53SW, i7Q, 16GB Ram, GTX460M 1.5GB, and it works great. With the new Asus G55 (or G75), with the GTX600 series cards, that would be a lot better (twice the CUDA cores compared to my GTX460M).
