    Hello there,
I’ve been offline editing on the media composer for the past 10+ yrs for a couple different shops. and thinking ahead, if i were to go out on my own, how much would a new turnkey fcp suite cost me with aftereffects, compressor, mini dv deck, wiring… etc. $30-40k? needs to have a professional install look, and would reside in a edit suite at a boutique. just looking for a rough figure on the equipment costs is all. thanks for your help.

All depends. What sort of work are you planning to do? It’s too flexible and scalable of a system to just pop off a price. But $30-40k sounds like way too much.

You can go from the software on a laptop to a full 2K edit system with FCP.

A well equipped professional set up for HD or 2K work can easily run you between 30-40K when you factor in monitoring and reliable mass storage to handle that media.

For a DV only setup you could probably get away with under 10K

    Peace and Love 🙂

    Hello Editor,

I’m a fan of your posts on Art of the Edit.

All the numbers below are intended to give you an idea. Some are high, some are low, all are only intended to help as you start to research this more deeply.

Mac Pro pretty tricked out: 5K

    2x 23″ Computer monitors: 1.5K

AJA or Black Magic Design Card(you don’t need this if only DV): 3K

    Sony DSR-11 DV deck: 1.5K

    Assorted Adobe software: 1.5K

    FCS2: 1.3K

    Plug-ins, other assorted software: 1.5K

    Decent furniture including racks: 5K

    Power Conditioning and UPS: 2-5K

    Genelec Speakers with Sub: 2.5K

    SD monitor used: .8K

Inexpensive HD reference monitoring (lcd, 17″): 2.6K

External SDI Scopes (used): 4K OR External composite scopes (used): 1.2 K

    Wires, lots of wires: 1.5K

    External Storage: .3-1.5K

Small audio mixer for monitoring: .5K

DVD player, VHS machine, other junk: .5 K

Xraid ( you don’t need this unless you are doing HD: 10K (more or less)

    Other hardware: 3-5K

Everything on the list adds up to about 50K. You could spend a lot less or a lot more depending on your specific needs.

If you only want to do DV, you can get by with much, much less. Of course you could choose to furnish everything with Ikea
