These 4k TV’s from Seiki….
Posted by John Davidson on November 27, 2013 at 6:23 pmI’m so so tempted to grab one of these in anticipation of the new Mac Pros. These prices are kind of ridiculous, even if the monitor is very barebones.
Pretty interesting write-up/video on them. He’s using a macbook to drive a Thunderbolt Display as well as this 4K TV. It’s a shame the iMac doesn’t have a HDMI out.https://cheesycam.com/cheapest-4k-hdmi-display-monitor-with-macbook-pro-retina/

If you’re desperate to have a 4K pixel native display, it’s great to know there’s something out there for under $1000. But that would be it- for colour accuracy you’d definitely need something else.

How much mastering in 4k are you doing?

November 27, 2013 at 6:42 pmDefinitely interesting. In addition to possible color issues, the Cheezycam review says it drops down to 30hz which is a bummer. Still, at that price very tempting and hopefully points to better quality affordable 4K displays soon. Thanks for posting.

It drops down there because of the macbook limitations though, right? I would expect the Mac Pros to have no such limitations (knock on wood).
We currently do about as much 4k as we did HD in 2007 (none). 4K mastering isn’t as important to me as using 4K footage – especially in an HD Comp or something like that. Our network clients won’t transition to 4k for at least 5 years, I would (very optimistically) guess. I think 4K won’t be feasible for broadcast until the majority of the country has gigabit internet.
In the meantime though, if I get a blackmagic cinema camera v3 next year I’d love to see videos of my dog in stunning 4k.

Hmmm, I don’t know. Would be great if it worked better with new MacPro or new Retina MBPs (he was testing with last year’s). I’m in the same boat as you re: 4K jobs (only one has crossed my desk in the past 5 years). What I’m more interested in is a retina quality large screen monitor. My new retina MBP has spoiled me. By comparison, my Cinema Display looks rather meh. Hoping Apple will update Mac OS to take advantage of high density displays beyond the laptop (if they haven’t done so already).

November 27, 2013 at 9:12 pmSomewhere it says 30htz is a limitation of 4k over hdmi 1.4

November 27, 2013 at 9:30 pmSo even if Apple pushes out a HDMI2.0 firmware update, and you have an HDMI2.0 cable, the HDMI1.4 port on the TV will still be an impediment.

November 27, 2013 at 10:56 pmYou don’t have to deliver in 4K to get the benefit of a 4K monitor, if you are shooting in 4K.

November 27, 2013 at 11:48 pm39″ 4K model down to $483

Not that one would see any difference from HD at that size.65″ for $3000 is almost “realistic”
