    hi folks,

I have a question about creating a decent Rain-Effect in AE. Now, it doesn’t have to be absolutely realistic since the project I intend to use it for is a low-budget musicvideo. And I know there are several rain-posts in this forum, which are great but I haven’t found a solution to my problem yet!

The Rain itself actually is not the problem, multiple copies of the “CC Rain” PlugIn does it for me! What I’m interested in is the drops falling to a solid ground! At the moment my rain comes from above the image and just “falls out” of the frame below. But I’d like to have the rain dropping down on the ground (again, it doesn’t really have to be realistic, it just should look nice..).

I tried “CC Drizzle” on an adjustment layer which I rearranged in 3D-Space so it matches the ground in my footage (which isn’t moving because of a static tripod-shot, only the artist is moving a bit) but it’s no use like that! I think the drizzle-effect is intended to be used only for liquid grounds…

Also, I’m wondering how to get some nice looking “splahes” of the rain on my camera lens… you know it’s a musicvideo and it can look a little trashy, so… any ideas? thanks in advance 😉

I like to mix practical effects with digital ones myself. Check out the ad on the right hand side of this post for the compositor’s toolkit from Digitaljuice. Their rain components look like they might work pretty well for you. Check out the demo movies to show how they layer and scale them.

As far as the lens, why not shoot a practical? Shoot a black cloth with your focus set properly, hang a piece of glass in front of your lens and get out your toy squirtgun or spray bottle. Add it in as a straight key in AE.
