This camera gives us amazing images but no way to get at them! A true Pandora’s Box. None of these 4K files can be opened in Premiere. Adobe hasn’t given any update I can find other than ‘we know about it’. Very frustrating. The files we get are .MXF and aren’t supported. I can change the extension to .MPG and import in to Premiere but working on an 8 second test file proved this would never work on a two or three minute timeline.

We’re getting ready to do a big shoot and rented 3 XF705’s I’m now sad to say.

I found a program that looks like it will do the job of transcoding the files, but I’m worried it won’t be able to handle large amounts of 4K footage at a time. Has anyone used Scratch Play Pro? It’s a tad shady looking for my taste…

I also wanted to confirm because I’ve gotten conflicting reports about Davinci Resolve, can it transcode these 4K files? I couldn’t view the file when I loaded it in to the free version, does it have to be the paid version to even view them? I figured I’d be able to at least view them.

    Thanks!

    What is shady?
Before BM took over Resolve, this was a very important company.

But if you only need to transcode, why not use something like FFmpeg?
(I can write a front end for you if you need.)

Hey Bouke when I mention ‘shady’ I was referring to the Scratch Play Pro program I found for conversion. It takes over the whole screen, changes the mouse icon and just generally looks unpleasant. I’m also sure it will raise eyebrows in the office to see it running.

I’ve heard of and attempted working with FFMPEG years ago. Thanks for the suggestion I’m researching it now, would you possibly have a link to a good starters guide? I really would love to understand and be able to utilize it in our workflows. What goes in to building a front end? Is it time consuming? Thanks so much for the response sir!

    Great,

Please inform here, if you are able to use FFMPEG to convert Canon XF705 .mxf(h265) to some usable from.
