can anyone give their pros’ cons for th I/O LA.

I am looking for analog connectivity to my KONA 2 system and I am leaning toward this AJA product (partly because I am so happy with the support. It would be nice if it had an SDI input as well so that you could send an SDI from the KONA 2 and output that through the I/O and to a betacam deck, but it seems that I would have to be selecting the I/O as the ouput device when going to betacam.

I like that the I/O will give me analog audio into the machine so can this replace the flying cow box as well.

    Is the workflow:

    1. KONA 2 everything SDI and Digtal Audio
    2. I/O LA everythig analog.
    3. Use an Kona 2 easy setup to edit the captured material?

    does this make sense?

is this how it was designed?

    are there other options?

[David Battistella] “SDI input as well so that you could send an SDI from the KONA 2 and output that through the I/O and to a betacam deck,”

You can output Component directly from the Kona 2 to a Betacam deck if need be. I do that whenever someone requires a BetaSP master from a project.

    Walter,

I am using the analog out as the monitor so it would be nice if the I/O la could take one SDI input (via the KONA) and convert that to the compnent out of the AJA) compnent monitoring is much harder to distribute than composite or SDI. That’s why I was just saying it would be nice if the LA had one sdi in.

Time to build a bigger patch bay!

    Thanks,

    David

    David,

The purpose of the I/O LA and LD were for either analog only in out to firewire or SDI in and out to firewire only applications.

If you require both then the larger IO with both analog, SDI in and outs is more suitable.

If you can’t afford the larger IO my recommendations would be to add a SDI card to your monitor and use the K2 analog outputs to feed the betacam deck.

Or get a component video DA to feed the multiple component analog sources.

To me the i/o seems like a better solution than because it gives me the ability to get component betacam sources into a KONA workflow. I can capture via the i/o and then use the KONA for everthing else.

I guess I could just buy a flying cow box and and component to SDI converter and get the beta machine in but the I/o gives a bit of added flexibility with s-video and composite as well.

I would only use the I/o as a capture device and I would use the K-BOx as the component out (most of my outputs are to d-beta).

As far as the SDI monitoring solution the cost of that card is about three times the cost of the I/o. I can use my existing DA to send the componet signal around.

So is it FLying cow and AJA mini converter or I/O la?

    Thanks,

    David

    Hi David –
Everyone hates when I do this, but if you are doing HD projects, and you own an HD VTR, an HD monitor, as well as all this other equipment – can’t you afford the extra $1000 to get the AJA I/O? And if you don’t own the HD VTR, and don’t have HD projects, why are you dealing with the Kona 2? Just buy the AJA I/O (the full version) and do every combination of SDI, composite, and component with NO ISSUES. If you are doing HD projects, I can only hope that you are making a lot of money on these projects (HD is expensive – especially the decks and cameras), and I hope that if you are doing HD projects, your budget is large enough to be able to afford the rest of the hardware that you need – like a standard AJA I/O box.

The reality of many jobs is that the budgets are unfortunately just not where you would expect them to be. It seems the production companies are recognizing that the actual NLE hardware is getting cheaper, especially on the FCP side, so they expect that HD should not cost all that much more than SD.

Not in all cases, but it’s certainly something I’m seeing here.

I fail to see what gave anyone the impression that this was a budget issue. I was simply asking what people do for analog functionality out of the KONA 2. I respond to my needs and the needs of my clients. There are some HD projects and their are some projects that are SD, the KONA 2 is capable of both, that is the flexibility and functionality I bought. Is SD now some kind of carnal sin? Am I supposed to tell my clients to go away because I have an HD only system?

All I was looking to do here was to get some idea’s on how people handle analog I/O with the KONA 2. Some people are using SD connects, etc. but I ordered an LA yesterday after asking a few questions here. Then all of a sudden I am being judged for posting a question.

A while back there was this format called BETACAM. Some people still actually use it or they may have a library of betacam footage that they want to integrate into a post workflow. I have a full SD suite that can capture SDI and component betacam, but I bought the I/O as a convenience item, so that I could capture to the same system.

Bob, your “don’t be cheap” post is what I would expect from a reseller. But as Walter points out we are running businesses and are building them at our own individual pace. I am sorry that offends you but it’s a choice I make based on what I need.

Also, the fact that you qualify your post by saying some people get mad at me for doing this, does not give you permission to be rude. If you know a post may offend someone then why would you post it. It’s poor etiquete. period. There are much more civilized ways of posting in a constructive and decent manner.

    David,

I am using the AJA A-D and flying cow converters for my analog needs currently but I have decided that the IO LA would be more ideal. Primarily because I want to use it with a powerbook for in the field work as well as streamlining working with the K2. Regarding the SDI card I purchased two for my 20L5/1 and 14L5/1 monitors used. I was able to get two SDI cards for the price of one. The price of one used SDI card was nearly 1/10th the price of a full blown IO.

I personally did not think your post had anything to do about budget concerns rather it was a quest to make a proper investment decision based on your current client needs.

All I can say is you made the right decision. The io la will do you well and is a little easier to implement than a host of a/d/d/a converters for video & audio. Plus, the io & K2 play very nice with each other. if you already have a flying cow, I’d hang on to it for the K2, you’ll need it someday.

    David –
this is a direct answer, if money is not an issue.

    1) do as Walter Biscardi has done, and purchase a Sony J-3 or J30-SDI, and pop your Beta tapes into the J-30, which will turn your tapes into a SDI signal that can go directly into the Kona 2 with embedded audio. Easy – just like Walter does.

    2) purchase the standard AJA I/O. You can use the I/O control panel to allow the unit to act as a CAV-SDI converter, and take the SDI out of the AJA I/O, and go directly into the Kona 2. You will not have this capability with the AJA I/O LA.

My clients have countless archive librarys of Beta footage from the theme parks. Those that don’t own a Digi Beta, but own Beta VTRs and a single HD VTR (and Kona 2) are all using the I/O for this function.

Is this a better, more direct answer for you?
