September 4, 2008 at 7:05 amHi
Well, they put two dual-core CPUs in the last run of G5s – how high is that Mac rated now? With i7 (Nehelem) due Q4 2008, what longevity value did a 486×2/66 have just a few months before the Pentium shipped?

September 4, 2008 at 11:23 amHi.
Does not have eny point at the moment in my eyes.
I have 8 cored pro and mostly it runs on 1 – 2 cores.
The rest of cores run idle …. and ram also.—

September 4, 2008 at 11:26 amThat sounds good. How much difference will that make? I mean, presumably a faster processor = faster rendering, so to use render times as an example, can someone give a rough idea of how much quicker 6 cores would be to 4 cores?

A whole lot faster.

Maybe, maybe not, too early to tell.

Well since there’s absolutely no way to test these processors right now there’s no way to know for sure. The processors are only one part of the equation, the entire configuration of the machine determines the final speed. So for any of us to speculate how much faster, theoretically, these processors would be over today’s processors is just wild guesses. No clue on if these processors would even appear in a Mac.

September 4, 2008 at 1:09 pmI agree.
I hope Apple starts from scratch on FCP7 and makes better use
of their hardware. Compressor does well, but the rest lags
behind. This new processor will be great for After Effects, etc. though.

September 4, 2008 at 1:29 pmI think we all know how this works by now. The hardware upgrades keep on coming, and you’re never likely to have the best for long.
Consider this recent history with Apple products:Early 06-I buy a fully Loaded 20″ iMac, then they introduce the 24″
This year-I buy a 1GB iPod shuffle for $79, less than a week later there’s a 2 GB model for $69
I buy an iPhone for $499, less than a week later they announce the 3G for $299.
Last week-I bought an $3,900 8 core Mac Pro, so get ready for a 12 core to hit the market soon, for $999! (okay, maybe not at that price)
