Activity Forums Sony Cameras The Future of SxS

I just thought I’d bring this little tidbit of info to the forum. I don’t think that Sony’s SxS card technology will be going away anytime soon and I hope they’re also working on increasing the capacity of these cards. I’m sure that Arri® is hoping as well. Their new Alexa digital cinema camera records Apple Pro Res straight to SxS Pro memory cards.

As a side note: a 32 gig card is good for 116 minutes best quality when used with XDCAM EX cameras. The new Arri Alexa® using the same card shooting Pro Res 4×4 (with alpha) is good for…………..12 minutes. This shows how versatile these SxS cards really are. And how fast the transfer rates are, too.

Given the SxS capabilities which are almost overkill for the 35Mbps SDHC capable codec, it’ll be interesting to see Sony’s next camera that will REALLY need SxS. My guess is this is where Sony’s Pro 4/3 chip camera will be heading. AVCHD 24Mbps is one of the weaker links in the HDSLR chain.

I agree with both of you. But will Sony crank up their Mpeg-2 or introduce their own Mpeg-4???

    Good Luck

Sure that SONY haven’t developed that technology (and complicated file structure) just for the EX-1.

Don’t forget that one of the Ss in SxS is for Sandisk.

I suspect it will be used for a while by Sony and not too many other folks. Sony has a long, proud history of making up it’s own media and supporting it single-handedly long after the industry has moved on. MiniDisc, ATRAC, Betamax, anyone? L) Frankly it’s storage technologies such as this that seem a lot more exiting:

Although JVC HM seriers has an option for SxS and Alexa uses it as well.
There are high data rate recorders that work with CF though so I don’t think there’s great value to SxS.
