The future of QuickTime?
I work in television and film editorial and pretty much use Avid exclusively. One of my biggest hopes for a new FCP, as an Avid user, was a rewritten QuickTime or something to replace QuickTime as a solid, standard, pro video format. QuickTime currently is a standard in professional post, but it suffers from color accuracy issues and other bugs that make it unreliable. I assumed with an update as large as FCP X, a re-writing from the ground up, that QuickTime would be part of the overhaul. But I don’t think Apple even mentioned QuickTime at the preview event. So I was wondering, what do you think the future of QuickTime is? Has there been any info that’s leaked out on this that I’ve missed?

Yes, there has been some discussion in this forum, in between other more speculative topics 😉
The new replacement is called AV Foundation.Discussion here has mostly been based on the investigative diggings of Philip Hodgetts:

The Hodgetts articles are exceptional
try to work with H.264 videos from your iPhone, on FCP or AVID, on a strong workstation, you will see it choke your system. while an iPhone’s tiny processor and minimal RAM deals with it smoothly…

I think QT is a container/wrapper and a platform, not a video format. But this is confusing terminology at times

Based on the experience of the Mercury Playback Engine in Premiere it shouldn’t be a problem…if Apple can match Adobe programming chops.
For those who may be unaware (not unknown in the FCP universe 🙂 Premiere CS5+ plays multiple layers of HD 264 smoothly…and adds RT CUDA effects.
