  • the frustrations of Sony XDCam HD media, Avid and FCP compatibility

I know this is a subject that has been covered quite a bit here but i thought i’d post my question anyway. I’ve been dealing with a lot of footage from the Sony XDCam EX1 (1440×1080, 1920×1080) apparently Clip Browser only works with one of the new Intel Macs? Will it work on a G4 running 10.4 and FCP 5.4? Also even when running Clip Browser on a Pro-Mac there did not seem to be a proper Quicktime HD FCP compatible export option, is there some sort of special version of clip browser specifically for FCP we’re not using? Cause it sure ain’t easy to find on the highly confusing and dysfunctional Sony website. Are there any easy work-around suggestions? The client is having to export the footage into QT himself and seems to have a very limited choice of export options, any suggestions?
    I’m still running with FCP 5 on a G4 (10.4)

Also is there any way or process of importing/converting Avid project files directly into FCP or visa versa?

    thanks much

[Damon Packard] “apparently Clip Browser only works with one of the new Intel Macs? Will it work on a G4 running 10.4 and FCP 5.4?”

You need an Intel Mac when dealing with XDCAM EX footage…correct. Only these processors can really deal with that format type.

And you need FCP 6…FCP 5.1.4 came out before the EX cameras. FCP 6 was the first to offer support for that camera.

ProRes is an option…that support comes with FCP 6. Also the XDCAM EX codec…comes with FCP 6. Again, you need FCP 6 to work with footage from this camera. With the advent of new camera technologies, you need newer machines and software to deal with that footage. Price to pay for being on the cutting edge.

[Damon Packard] “Also is there any way or process of importing/converting Avid project files directly into FCP or visa versa?”

Sure. https://www.automaticduck.com. This will convert SEQUENCES…not entire projects. The file structures of the projects are just completely different. And this won’t deal with the media. The Avid Codecs are installable on the Mac, but several of the FCP codecs don’t come separately for install on other machines.

Shane could a quad or dual G5 handle it?

I’ve often found what is said to be handled on an intel mac
is possible to work ok on a quad or dual G5 with pci-e slots.

unless the software itself is intel binary only.

Well, my Dual 2.0Ghz G5 couldn’t, but I don’t know about the later Quad Core models. I think that their requirement is Intel…
