The best way to work with AE CS4 and FinalCut Pro 2
Posted by Bruno Marchand on April 7, 2009 at 7:39 pmI everyone,
my question is about finding the best way to work between AE CS4 and Final Cut pro 2.
I’ve done a music video creating all my compositing sequence in AE and Exporting every clip in QuickTime Animationbut it took me like all my external hard drive space to do that, and im not telling you how much rendering time it took me.
I already heard about Automatic duck but im not sure is the best way to work.
thanks for your time

April 7, 2009 at 7:52 pmGet the Automatic Duck.
Edit your video in Final Cut Pro.
Stack up as many video tracks as you’ll need for compositing in AE.
Send the project to AE by using the Automatic Duck.
Your entire timeline will open up with all the video tracks intact and with all handles available.

April 8, 2009 at 2:56 pmThere’s even a section int he manual on how to move between AE and other external systems.
You don’t need Animation except to carry alpha.
You don’t automatic duck unless you expect to move the entire FCP sequence to AE. This is a rare requirement for most of us but, if you need it, AD is the best solution., Most FCP users are only sending some footage to AE for effects and compositing, most of us simply do not need to send the entire sequence. As Shane says, you only need to render out of AE to the same specifications and settings as your FCP sequence. The Animation codec is a universal, lossless, alpha-capable container used only when you need those properties.bogiesan

April 8, 2009 at 3:48 pmIf you have Premier Pro CS4 on your system the latest update includes a FCP importer that allows you to import a FCP generated XML of your sequence into Premier Pro. Once you save the PP project you can import it into AE.

Really?!? Have you tried it? Does it actually work? We have two copies of CS4 Production Premium here in the shop but we don’t touch Premiere so I didn’t know that was in there.

April 8, 2009 at 7:54 pmI did a quick & simple test the other day and it seemed to go fine. Two clips on track 1, a single clip on track 2 that covered the track 1 cut point, exported an XML out of FCP, imported the XML into PP, saved it and imported it into AE. Then I rendered the AE sequence and imported the render into FCP and placed it on track 3 of the original sequence to check it. The render matched the original sequence.

Not always the case. If I have stacked several clips tht need compositing (on a long timeline), I created a nest of JUST those clips (thus creating a sequence) and send it out to AE like greased lightning. I know the in-out-duations
and the clips are linked to the original QT media. I find this is a great way to get the best of both apps.

This is really cool Dan. I’ll have to try it with a full timeline and see what happens using your method. Thanks for sharing, this will be really cool if it actually works with a full timeline.

April 9, 2009 at 2:20 amYes, given the price of licenses/updates for Automatic Duck, if this works well it would be really nice. I don’t have CS4 yet, but I had heard about this feature. We only have one license of AD and use that system to convert FCP projects for AE – it works because of centralized storage, but would be much more efficient for each edit suite to be able to do this locally.
