the best way to ID surfer connection speed ??
Is there anyway to ID the ‘surfer’ connection speed to a site?
I want to be able to change the content dependent on the speed. It may not be practical, but I was thinking of bouncing a bunch of data using client side Javascript & server side ‘timedelay’ script (in the background).
Is this a waste of time or a good idea?

you could likely do something with flash and have a large flash movie download to the user’s browser and then time how long it took, but to get anything near an accurate reading, you’d need a decently large file and at least a few seconds to test the download (i.e. like a 20kb file wouldn’t give you the metrics you need), and at that point, you’re going to annoy users if they have to sit and wait for your download speed tester to finish to decide which site to show them…
so it’s feasible, but it would be horrible usabilty, as (using me as example) sometimes even broadband users don’t want the flash version and often click on “low bandwidth” versions anyway…
