Text Mask with Picture in the Masked Areas
Posted by Alex Kerezy on July 14, 2010 at 10:35 amHi,
I want to create a text mask, where a movie shows through the text…. and I have no problem with that….. BUT ALSO…. a text mask such that the areas of the screen that are NOT text…. show a picture. When I add transparent text, you can set the background color a solid color…. but I want a picture.
I’m somewhat new to Vegas so please explain slowly. I looked for text masking tutorials but none of them do this, they just let some color or some movie show through the text.
THANKS!!

July 14, 2010 at 7:33 pmCreate three video tracks
Place the background video/photo at the lower track
Place the content for the text at the middle track
Place the white text with a transparant background at the upper track
Make the middle track a child of the upper track
Set the composition mode of the upper track to multiply mask. That’s all.

July 15, 2010 at 12:29 amHi… Well a picture is worth a thousand words…and I guess my description of what I wanted was only 800 or so….
so I’ve uploaded a picture to show you what I want to do. I have seen this in movies and TV – usually in the title or intro.
Any Help Would Be Appreciated

July 15, 2010 at 6:45 amThat’s exactly what you get when you do what I mentioned earlier.
Look here for the pictures:https://www.videomontagefaq.nl/index.php?action=artikel&cat=374226&id=413&artlang=nl

July 15, 2010 at 3:05 pmHi,
Thank you so much for your help. Your suggested method did not work. If you’ll notice in your example… your text doesn’t cover the picture. In your example, the text is very small at the bottom, below the picture….so of course the picture shows (https://www.videomontagefaq.nl/index.php?action=artikel&cat=374226&id=413&artlang=nl) Thank you for your suggestion anyway.I have a picture that shows what I am looking for (the top picture), and the results I ended up with following your directions (the bottom picture).

A verbal description of what I want is this: I have text, a picture and a video. The letters of the text are very large and cover most of the screen - I want to mask the text such that the video shows through the text, but the video does NOT show through the picture. Any area outside the text is the picture. See the Example
Thanks!!

July 15, 2010 at 5:24 pmThe method I described should give you exactly what you show in the CORRECT picture. But in your NOT WHAT I WANT picture it can be seen that you did not apply the multiply (mask) mode to the upper track…

July 16, 2010 at 12:43 amHi Theo. Again – Thank You for your help. I DID apply the Multiply (Mask) mode to the Upper Layer…see the picture

Honestly…. I ‘think’ I have followed your instructions. It almost seems like I am getting the ‘reverse’ result or a ‘reverse’ mask.
Nothing should show through the picture…. except where the text is.

July 16, 2010 at 7:10 amOK, now I see. You have set the parent motion mode to multiply, not the track motion mode. The mode for the track motion can be found on the right side of the track header.
