Text Font Pulldown Menu Frozen
Posted by Kai Whittaker on October 17, 2005 at 2:18 pmHi.
I can no longer choose different fonts for my titles… In all of my text effects, the font pulldown menu (under the text field) is set to Lucidia Grande, and I can;t change it. I though maybe i hat too many fonts loaded but that’s not it. I tried using just a few fonts in the library and i still cannot use the pulldown menu.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

October 17, 2005 at 2:53 pmThe first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.
Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”Click the following link for instructions.
https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html
A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCPro & FCExpress.Download these free Apple Scripts at
https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
This is one FCP tip that has helped in hundreds of “odd” problems.

October 17, 2005 at 4:42 pmMy experience is that “trashing prefs” will not change this. I have not had any font choice in any cg text in FCP for years. Using title 3d is the only alternative and the only thing I can tell you there is be sure to save often because title 3d crashes FCP constantly. Otherwise use another titling app…. MOtion, Live type, Boris etc
Good luck

I haven’t heard that this is a wide-spread problem (and I’m on these boards more than a bit.)
I use “Title 3D” hundreds of times a month (a week?) with virtually no crashes.

October 17, 2005 at 6:31 pmI don;t have problems with 3D title either…
But trashing prefs, fixings perms, flashing pram had no effect. i know the text menu works cause i can press the up and down keys and scroll through fonts, but the menu just doesn;t pull down, it’s invisible…
hmmmm….
i guess i’l reinstall final cut when i have time.,..

October 17, 2005 at 6:34 pmFCP will only work with “Type 2” (Truetype) fonts.
But you should have plenty of them since that’s what Mac includes with its System software.
All of your fonts (the ones you want to use with FCP, anyway) should be placed in the Fonts folder located at the end of this hierarchy:
User Name (yours) > Library > Fonts
FWIW, Title 3D (and Title Crawl) can use both “Type 2” and “Type 1” (Adobe) fonts.

October 17, 2005 at 6:43 pmIt may be too many fonts loaded. On one of our systems an art director came in and insisted that he needed access to the elevendy billion fonts on his special font disc. The basic text tool in 4.5 displayed the behavior you discribe. Actually we found that the drop down appeared behind the viewer window. Anyway- deleting the extra fonts fixed it.

October 17, 2005 at 7:00 pmThis happened to me…
I will assume you are using a DECKLINK (kona) cared with your machine then correct?
What’s happening is the pop up window for the fonts is appearing on your NTSC monitor, but you have your video outputting to the monitor so you don’t see the font pop up.
Go in and disable video output to the NTSC monitor and you will see the extended desktop on the NTSC monitor and if you open your fonts..the pop up appears here in this monitor.
You can choose your fonts there…
Nice, I was working at another office and I don’t know how this got that way, but that’s how I was able to move on.
See if that’s the case… the PREFERENCE repair doesn’t do anything here…. but should mention if you are using an video card like decklink to help with an answer.
