text layers are a bit of an anomaly in ae, in that regardless of size or position, ae always sees them as the size of the comp. that means linear wipe’s completion percentage is relative to the comp, and when you move the text layer, it is independent of the wipe completion, thus effectively masking the text layer..

it works the same as using a track matte, it’s just another method to accomplish a similar effect.
