  • text effect on corrugated doors…..

Posted by Steve Pindyski on July 30, 2007 at 2:46 am

Hi….I’m trying to make the name of an auto body shop appear to be painted on their service
garage door. The garage doors are corrugated so the type has to look like it’s indented along the corrugation.

Also, when the doors are raised, the letters should separate with each garage panel.

Thank you all for your time.

Distort>Displacement Map is your friend, Click on Aharon’s head, and scroll down to his three tuts covering Displacement Maps. The tuts take awhile to watch, but there are lots of ins and outs with the Displacement Map Effect and he covers them in detail.

You should be able to use a photo/video of the doors as the “Displacement Map Layer”. It can be enhanced with something as simple a Levels, pulling in the Input Black and Input White Points to give it more contrast, enhancing the displacement.

“Also, when the doors are raised, the letters should separate with each garage panel.”

You’ll need separate layer for the separating letters, one layer for each panel. Once they have the corrugated look you like, precomp them make the precomp 3D, move the anchor point to where the door swivels, the keyframe the X rotation as the doors rise. At least that seems like it should work.

Aharon’s Displacement Map tuts are the key to getting the look you want.

Have you tried changing the text’s transfer mode to multiply, overlay or another mode?

The original footage won’t displace the text correctly unless its values exactly match the contour of the corrugation. For best results, I’d create a displacement map of blurred vertical stripes to displace the text. It has to move with the door, as yikesmikes suggested.

“I’d create a displacement map of blurred vertical stripes to displace the text.” said Steve.

    So true, so true.

You can make a nice one with Grid on a Solid.

    Render>Grid

    Grid Settings
Anchor: change the y to -3
Size From: Width & Height Sliders (the Default was Corner Pin)
Crank up the Height to 600 or more (drag the blue number or Right Click>Edit Value to increase the range)

Adjust the Width and Border to match the Corrugations.

Blur, Fast Blur or whatever blur you like.
