Telecine without a telecine. . . is this right?
Someone told me that this actually works… it sounds shady, but I gotta ask. It’s been a while since I’ve been behind a camera.
Goal: a VERY cheap, low quality way of getting old black & white 8mm film footage into a Media Composer
step 1: 8mm film projector plays at 24fps
step 2: shoot the screen with any video camera that can capture at 24p
step 3: digitizeNaaa, ‘can’t be that easy? You’d at least have to sync the two, right?

Except that normal speed for 8mm/Super8 is 18fps, (unless intentionally shot at 24fps for blowup to 16 or 35).
Some Super8 projectors can project at 24fps, so you could try the 24P capture and then speed bump
the video down. Getting the projector and camera “in phase” would be pretty much hit or miss unless the proj had variable
speed.—

The two still need to be synced in order to provide a true frame rate to frame rate and more importantly “shutter to shutter” synchronization.
There is a system on the market that does a frame per frame grab with a rear screen projection method that looks pretty interesting and would give you a true frame accurate capture – similar to a scanner versus a telecine. It is a fairly low cost device (~$800 I believe). Let me snoop around and see if I can find the link.

As an interesting aside, this is the method used by video piracy exponents in many countries the world over. They just shoot movies off a theatre screen on a small DV camera. The camera does an admirable job of automatic aperture control as well of synchronizing to the screen refresh rate. And the result, though abysmal quality VCD, is remarkably flicker free.
So maybe this may work for your 8mm transfer as well.
