okay, college student about to edit my first student film (film being the key word- i’ve only done digital before).
the director is planning to shoot on super 16mm, then transfer to HD for me to edit. no problem from that point on.

my question is about the telecine step and getting the footage to my computer (i’ve never had to deal with telecine before). after the shoot is finished and she goes to telecine, how should i ask her to transfer the footage? from what i’ve heard so far, there are only a few places in LA that can transfer directly to hard drive, and it’s really expensive. so i guess it’s going to have to be transfered to a tape format, then we’ll need to rent the appropriate deck to capture it. is that the best route?

also, what HD format would be easiest (and most cost effective) for the telecine? i’m not too big a fan of HDV. i’m more of a fan of DVCPro HD, since there is less quality loss (HDV uses mpeg 2 compression if i rememeber right). is there a better format for this process?

thanks in advance for the wisdom, and sorry of it’s a little unclear. i’ve been kinda worried about this for a while.

DVCProHD sounds like the best for your situation.

What kind of FCP do you have? Just firewire input? Then you’re pretty much stuck with DVCPRO-HD: which should be more than plenty for a student film.
