  • Tears in Canvas Viewer in FCP 7.

Posted by Adam White on January 10, 2010 at 5:26 pm

    Hello,

Recently I’ve been having an irritating problem with the Canvas Viewer in Final Cut Pro (v.7.0.1). I get constant video tearing in the Canvas Viewer. This occurs when the video is played back on either the main iMac screen, or the additional DVI Monitor. Whilst the footage is still viewable, and the tears don’t render the viewer useless by any stretch, this clearly isn’t correct and can become frustrating when working on scenes with a lot of motion and quick cuts.

I’ve tried several different playback settings combination’s (Safe RT/Unlimited RT/Different frame rates/scrub high quality e.t.c) but nothing seems to help. Also, video tears only seem to occur in FCP – if viewing a video in QuickTime Player there is no tearing.

    I’m running on;
    iMac 24″ 2.66GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo
    4GB 1067MHZ DDR3 RAM
    nVidia GeForce 9400 256mb

Does anyone have any suggestions about how I might resolve this? I’m hoping this isn’t a hardware issue!

    Best,
    Adam

“Tear” doesn’t help us very much. if you search for the term you’ll see why. You’ll need to tell us exactly what “tear” means to you or, better, post a frame grab.
On whites? Reds? High or low contrast or every image?

I want to know, are they tears of joy or tears of sorrow?

    Is it interlaced footage?

From what source, DV/DV50 or Uncompressed/ProRes? The latter has the opposite field order

    Are you using Easy Setups?

Just wondering if it could be field reversal from not setting UFF/LFF correctly.

    Hi David,

    Thanks for your response.

    Here is a simulated example of the kind of video tearing I’m experiencing;
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tearing_%28simulated%29.jpg

It occurs most frequently when viewing video with fast motion and/or camera pans or movement. My first thought was that it’s a problem with the refresh rate, but this happens on both the iMac monitor and additional monitor, so I’m not really sure of how to resolve this.

    Hi B.J.

One of my first thoughts was that it was an interlacing issue, too. But I’ve tested this on some Progressive material and I still have the same problem.

I’ve tried DV Pal material with a Lower (Even) field dominance, and HDV 1080i60 footage with an Upper (Odd) dominance and have the same issue with both.

    I’m stumped!

They will certainly be tears of sorrow if I have to get hardware repaired! 🙁

Too much work to do for that!

That looks like a camera or capture issue to me Adam, almost like a tracking error.

Is it possible you were dropping frames while capturing?

Have you played back any material from another project that used to playback properly?

Have you tried changing the refresh rate (hz) of your monitor? It sounds like it doesn’t match your video.

Do you get tearing on an external video monitor? I’m sure you’re aware the canvas is not a full-quality preview, and no good for finishing edits. Have you also checked that you have the frame-rate set to full in the RT settings tabs?

I’ve tested several different projects, with footage captured from various different sources using different hardware. Some was captured via a Sony Z1, some through a Sony HDV FireWire Deck and there was even some XD-CAM footage that I tried and had the same problem.

What’s weird is that I’ve just tried a couple sequences again, and the tearing has now stopped. But I haven’t changed any settings either in FCP or System Preferences. I dare say the issue will be back – this has happened before.

I’m so confused! Been using FCP for about 3 years now, and have never come across this before!

    Ben,

    Thanks for your response.

Frame-rate is indeed set to full. The refresh rate cannot be changed (it’s at 60hz) on the additional monitor, but as I say the same problem occurs when playing back footage on the iMac monitor. As far as I’m aware there is no way of changing the refresh rate on the iMac – am I wrong about that?
